Interactive Map and Data Measures Economic Opportunity Across States
Friday, December 09, 2011
The American Human Development Project, commissioned
by Opportunity Nation, released interactive data from The Opportunity Index.
The Index reveals how states and counties perform on a set of indicators that
measure access to opportunity in communities within three dimensions—jobs and
local economy, education, and community health and civic life. For example,
states with low opportunity tend to have higher rates of negative social
outcomes, including teen pregnancy, child poverty and incarceration. The Index
is part of a larger campaign aimed at bringing the issues of opportunity and
mobility into mainstream debate and igniting grassroots efforts to spur action
by policymakers.
